Summer 2019 Catalogue Announcements Begin October 13th, 2018

October is our favorite month at Kyanite Publishing, and to celebrate, we’re announcing 22 new novelettes, novellas, and novels on October 13th, 2018! These will all be part of our Summer 2019 Catalogue, although they do not represent every title that will be released in Summer 2019. Stay tuned for more announcements later in the fall!

Many of you will remember that we hosted a launch party back in August and announced the majority of our Winter 2018 Catalogue. We love to reveal multiple covers and titles at once because we’ve found it helps to create a sense of community for our authors and readers. This launch will be even bigger because we’ll be giving our authors the opportunity to run giveaways on their own social media accounts, too. We encourage readers to follow the launch party on Twitter first, as we’ll link to our other platforms and our authors from there to start the day.

Although we can’t reveal much, we want to thank all the authors with a title being revealed on the 13th: J.R. Brooks, Enkelli Arn Robertson, Rhis Kaye, Majanka Verstraete, and Phebe Yawson. We fell in love with these stories and we’re honored to represent them in the world. We hope you’ll support these authors and tune in to learn more about their art!

Kyanite Publishing LLC was born earlier this year out of our love for stories and our desire to compete with small presses and traditional publishing houses as previously self-published authors. We understand how difficult the traditional publishing route can be, even for talented and motivated storytellers, and we believe we’ve created a solvent, smart, and streamlined business model that captures the spirit of self-publishing and the author-benefits of traditional publishing. Most importantly, our authors never pay to publish their work. We make money on title says, not authors.

Speaking of authors, we’d like to thank every single one of the individuals who’ve signed with us so far, many of whom took a chance on a startup not because they had no better options, but because they believed in our integrity, passion, and vision.

We’ll be posting many times here on the blog next week ahead of the launch of “Night Shift” by B.K. Bass on the 12th and the title/cover reveals on the 13th. If there’s anything you want to see specifically, please leave a comment and let us know!

Until next time,

Sam, Brian & Sophia

Launch Day Q&A with Editor in Chief B.K. Bass

It’s a special day here at Kyanite Publishing because we’re launching our first volume of the Kyanite Press! You can order it now from our website or Amazon. It’s also being carried at The Wyvern’s Tale in Asheville, NC and in more locations soon!

We’ve received a ton of questions from interested readers and writers. Editor in Chief, B.K. Bass answers the most pressing (get it?) below. If you have more questions for B.K., simply comment or send an email to info@kyanitepublishing.com! We’ll do our best to answer within 48 hours.

How do you pick the stories? Is there anything you’re looking for in particular?

Quality is the primary factor.  I’m looking for stories that are polished with an easy, readable flow.  Considering the Press publishes only short fiction, the narrative needs to be tightly constructed and convey its message within a limited length. I want to find stories that are either fast-paced and entertaining or that offer something new to the world.  Something that breaks the rules or explores an idea that hasn’t been explored before. Either way, the story needs to be a lot of fun or very intellectually engaging.

Does an author need a platform to submit?

No! One of the benefits of being a Kyanite Press author is that you have a permanent home on our website with links to your website and social media accounts. It’s a way to refer traffic to your platform, but if you don’t have a way to engage the audience it won’t do much for you.  If you just want to submit for fun or see your words in print, that’s not a problem. Not everybody is after the same thing.

What are your standard contract terms?

We use a licensing agreement.  The author retains all rights to the work.  In other words, they give us permission to use the story. We ask for a 90-day exclusivity. After, the author is free to publish the story anywhere. We have annual anthologies planned, and the author will receive a pro rata royalty for those sales.

Where will the Kyanite Press be sold?

As of September 2018, it’s available online through retailers such as Amazon, at The Wyvern’s Tale in North Carolina, and on our website. We are growing every day and will be adding retailers to our website as we reach terms.  Check out our events page for conferences and book fairs we’ll be attending – the Press will be sold there, too!

Is appearing in the Kyanite Press a good step to securing a book deal with Kyanite Publishing?

Establishing mutually beneficial relationships with all our authors and creating a family atmosphere within our community is our core philosophy. Publishing a short story with the Kyanite Press is a great way to start building that relationship but it’s in no way a requirement.

Tell us about the Halloween issue. How will it be different?

The Halloween volume is 100% horror.  We accept speculative horror for the Press year-round, but this issue is dedicated to it.  It’s also a whopping 200+ pages!

Does the Press take speculative romance/erotica short stories, like Kyanite Kiss?

If you have something that’s action-packed with a romantic sub-plot, that would be more up our alley. Think of the old pulp fiction magazines in the 1920’s, and you’ll have an idea of what we are looking for.  We’re marketing to a wide audience and at family-friend conferences, so a sexy, blonde cyberpunk detective or a scantily clad damsel in distress saved by the sword-wielding barbarian is great, but they can’t indulge in any graphic sex on our pages.

Well, that’s it for this round of questions and answers about the Kyanite Press. Stay tuned for more insider posts next week!

What’s a Publishing Committee?

Hello and good afternoon!

We’re getting a lot of questions about our processes from interested authors – and rightfully so. We’re a brand new company, our author-owned and operated concept is rare, we don’t have a “bestseller” between us, and none of us went to a prestigious writing program or worked for a big five publisher. To shed more light on who we are, whether we’d be a good fit for your goals, and how our business model, vision, and daily operations will sell stories and connect lifelong, loyal readers with our authors, I’ll be sharing an inside look at something new each week.

Today I want to talk about one of the most important things we do: select stories for publication.

Whether we find stories or they find us, it usually begins with B.K. (Brian) Bass, Director of Acquisitions. He reads the synopsis and sample the author provided and makes a recommendation to move forward or pass. There are exceptions to this process, especially regarding our imprints.

Kyanite Glass (digital), Crypt (horror), and Kiss (romance) are managed by myself, Brian, and Sophia respectively. We have a special interest in those types of stories and we usually take a leadership role with titles fitting our purview. Regardless of who is acting as acquisitions editor on a title, if all three board members approve we request a full manuscript. Once it’s delivered, all three of us read it (often outside office hours).

Describing, dissecting, and deciding which titles and authors to work with is the cornerstone of our operation and the best part of our job. Of course, we chat about the stories we’re excited about and the cool connections we make every day, but we also hold an official meeting about once a week. Our vision is to demonstrate unparalleled dedication to our authors, so we do not publish stories receiving anything but ecstatic, unanimous approval.

At this time, our publishing committee is comprised of all three author-owners: myself (Sam Hendricks), Brian Bass, and Sophia LeRoux. All three of us are lifelong science fiction, fantasy, and horror fans with a real love for storytelling. (We’re interested in many other genres, and we may choose to grow Kyanite to match those interests).

Stay tuned for more posts about contracts, international authors, international sales, daily operations, cover design, printing, distribution, marketing, publicity, community giving, events, and subsidiary rights!
