After

By John Prescott

Alex heard the reports on the nightly news his father always had playing in the background. Threats of nuclear Armageddon were becoming ominously commonplace. Still, he never thought he’d live to see the day that the rhetoric became reality.

He thought wrong.

He and his father raced for the military Cryo-Facility as reports poured in of nuclear missile launches from both sides. Alex closed his eyes in his cryopod and said a silent prayer for his mother. He awoke fifty-two years later in a facility full of nothing but corpses.

Now Alex ventures into a world he does not know. He will try to find his father – who might yet live, and his mother – who surely couldn’t have survived; in the After.

Reviews

Wow, for a first novel I am very impressed. The story held my attention throughout, with varied and interesting characters. The After world was well crafted and believable and felt like I was reading a story set in the Fallout universe. There was plenty of excitement and emotion. I would love to read more about the trials of Alex in further novels.
5 stars from Paul Blake on Goodreads.

This isn’t my usual genre but I picked it up in recommendation from a friend in my writer’s group. Prescott’s story is engaging- I particularly enjoyed the evolving character interactions/ developing friendships. I recommend this to those who enjoy speculative fiction, post-apocalyptic stories, and adventure.
5 stars from Sabrina on Goodreads.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It flowed smoothly and kept my interest. I enjoyed all of the characters and the parts they played. Thanks much for writing it for us!
5 stars from Veronica Noll on Goodreads.

This is a great YA story to introduce beginning readers, young and adult alike, who are interested in science fiction stories. Readers that dismiss YA books because they’re not a young adult is a little bit like refusing to watch thrillers on the grounds that you’re not a policeman or a dangerous criminal.
I enjoyed this book from the first page to the last page. Set in post-apocalyptic America, a teenager is released from a cryogenics facility and finds himself thrust into a dangerous new world. Alex sets out to find his parents while eluding a murderous militia and mega-beasts. He manages to make a few friends who aid him in his quest along the way; involving him in tragedy and triumph and romance and a twist that shatters Alex’s hopes. Alex ends up being the key figure who must stop a new threat from destroying his world again. I can’t wait for the sequel!
