Open Submission Window Closing Soon!

Our open submission window for this year will be closing in two weeks on November 1st, 2018. The community response to our first open submission window has been overwhelming, and we have been fortunate to receive a very high number of quality submissions as evidenced by our growing lineup of exciting releases scheduled for 2019.

We still have around sixty submissions to review, including those we have requested manuscripts for. As we do not out-source consulting services for our acquisitions process, there are only three of us to review these submissions on top of working on the production of upcoming titles. Our decisions on making publishing offers requires a unanimous vote, as well, so all three of us need time to review each manuscript. We will continue to review submissions in as timely a manner as possible, but it would be reasonable to expect up to six months for turn-around on some titles. Also, our release schedule for 2019 is almost full, so offers will soon be made for titles to be published in 2020.

We expect to have an open submissions window again in the fall of 2019, but the length of the window is yet to be decided. Most likely, it will be a 30 or 45-day window. In the meantime, expect to see open calls for submissions throughout the year for specific genres or themes.

If you would like to submit a partial manuscript before November 1st, please feel free to do so. The genres we are currently most interested in are speculative horror, classic fantasy (sword and sorcery, high fantasy, epic fantasy, heroic fantasy, etc), military science fiction, post apocalyptic, space opera, steampunk, cyberpunk, and other ‘punk genres.

Please visit our Submissions page for more details on our submissions guidelines.

What’s a Publishing Committee?

Hello and good afternoon!

We’re getting a lot of questions about our processes from interested authors – and rightfully so. We’re a brand new company, our author-owned and operated concept is rare, we don’t have a “bestseller” between us, and none of us went to a prestigious writing program or worked for a big five publisher. To shed more light on who we are, whether we’d be a good fit for your goals, and how our business model, vision, and daily operations will sell stories and connect lifelong, loyal readers with our authors, I’ll be sharing an inside look at something new each week.

Today I want to talk about one of the most important things we do: select stories for publication.

Whether we find stories or they find us, it usually begins with B.K. (Brian) Bass, Director of Acquisitions. He reads the synopsis and sample the author provided and makes a recommendation to move forward or pass. There are exceptions to this process, especially regarding our imprints.

Kyanite Glass (digital), Crypt (horror), and Kiss (romance) are managed by myself, Brian, and Sophia respectively. We have a special interest in those types of stories and we usually take a leadership role with titles fitting our purview. Regardless of who is acting as acquisitions editor on a title, if all three board members approve we request a full manuscript. Once it’s delivered, all three of us read it (often outside office hours).

Describing, dissecting, and deciding which titles and authors to work with is the cornerstone of our operation and the best part of our job. Of course, we chat about the stories we’re excited about and the cool connections we make every day, but we also hold an official meeting about once a week. Our vision is to demonstrate unparalleled dedication to our authors, so we do not publish stories receiving anything but ecstatic, unanimous approval.

At this time, our publishing committee is comprised of all three author-owners: myself (Sam Hendricks), Brian Bass, and Sophia LeRoux. All three of us are lifelong science fiction, fantasy, and horror fans with a real love for storytelling. (We’re interested in many other genres, and we may choose to grow Kyanite to match those interests).

Stay tuned for more posts about contracts, international authors, international sales, daily operations, cover design, printing, distribution, marketing, publicity, community giving, events, and subsidiary rights!
