American socialite Richard Jericho is a world-renowned treasure hunter.  British professor of archaeology Wilkins Chapman is his stoic compatriot. Together, the two have uncovered antiquities from South America, Africa, and Southeast Asia. On their most recent trip to the jungles of Peru they discover something more than they expected. As the fabric of reality comes apart, the two must journey across the globe chasing clues. As one answer leads to more questions, they begin to piece together a puzzle older than primal memory itself.

And the more they part the veil, the more of what lies beyond the veil spills into our reality.

Praise for Parting the Veil

“Finished this gem in 5 hours…I just couldn’t put it down. The rich history and landscapes bring the imagery right to you and the descriptive horror had me reeling. Can’t wait for more of this story!”
5 Stars from Michael Nadeau on Goodreads

A quick trip down the gothic rabbit hole. This story includes aspects of Lovecraft, Verne and the Indiana Jones series, yet the author has a voice that is distinctly his own. Bass is excellent at combining craft elements we usually expect in literary fiction (strong character development, interiority, and carful attention to setting) while not taking away from the action (or fun!)
Full disclosure: I was lent a digital ARC to review, but have an order in for my print copy – it’s that good.
5 Stars from Professor Cognome on Goodreads

There are very few writers today who can craft a world the way B.K. Bass can. It’s rich, it’s layered, and it’s enticing. The characters are real, the story is gripping, and you are a bit sad when you reach the last page. As much as I want to gush about my favorite this or that, even the slightest detail would lead to spoilers.
Slow hand clap for Parting the Veil.
5 Stars from J.D. Sanderson on Goodreads

An Enthralling and Epic Adventure of Twists, Turns & Mystery!
I was given an Advanced Reader Copy of “Parting the Veil” in exchange for an honest review.
“Parting the Veil” is hands down one the best books I have read in a long time! I am so looking forward to the continuation of this epic adventure in Book II of this “Beyond the Veil” series and see what else this author will bring us in the future! Bass’s writing is sublime, rich, seamless, and not a word is wasted!
This story is a snappy, yet rich, action-packed journey in the midst of the turmoil of the late 1930’s & is full of mystery and adventure. I found myself effortlessly enthralled by Bass’s “Parting the Veil” from the first sentence to the last, eagerly turning each page. This is not a book to miss if you enjoy fiction, adventure, history, mystery in any combination.
BK Bass is most definitely an author to watch! He is a rising star!
5 Stars from Jill Squire on Goodreads

Our August Releases

Hello, readers!

We have four books releasing in August, and all of them are exceptional in their own way. Check out the schedule below for more information!

August 2nd, 2019: After by John Prescott

Alex heard the reports on the nightly news. Threats of nuclear Armageddon were becoming ominously commonplace. Still, he never thought he’d live to see the day that the rhetoric became reality.

He thought wrong.

He and his father raced for the military cryofacility as descriptions poured in from England and the US of nuclear missile launches from both sides.

Alex’s father tried to reassure him that his mother would make it to safety. There was still time. Alex closed his eyes in his cryopod and said a silent prayer.

He awoke to blaring klaxons and flashing lights. The people in the pods beside him were dead. He was completely alone. Fifty-two years had passed.

Now Alex ventures into a world he does not know. He will try to find his father, who might yet live, and his mother, who surely couldn’t have survived, in the After.

August 13th, 2019: Loved Mars, Hated the Food by Willie Handler

Dix Jenner, a self-proclaimed slacker, is the first chef to live—and maybe die—on Mars. After an explosion kills his colony companions and leaves him with nothing but his spacesuit, his time on the faraway planet is about to expire… until he’s rescued by friendly Martians Bleeker and Seepa, who smuggle him into their vast underground civilization.

Despite an unfamiliar world of telepathy, strange class dynamics, and really bad food, Dix sets out to make his mark. After opening a cafe—who knew Martians loved espresso?—he starts to notice that responsibility can feel good. Not only that, but he’s got a new romance, and for the first time he actually cares.

Unfortunately, his success attracts the attention of the corrupt and narcissistic Martian Grand Leader. Forced to run to avoid being imprisoned, Dix gets lucky: a NASA rescue mission lands on Mars. But seeing it brings back the dark secret he’s been keeping from himself about the colony’s explosion, and now Dix must choose between returning to Earth or spending the rest of his life in a cell on the dusty red planet where he belongs.

August 23rd, 2019: Preservation Protocol by John Prescott

In the far future, robots and human-like Synthetics have become a part of everyday life for the citizens of New Wave City. Detective Max Kincaid’s okay with the robots, but the Synthetics? Not so much.

That becomes a problem after a meeting with Daryl Marston propels him into a murder conspiracy directly involving the artificial humans, something that should be impossible. Max soon finds himself working with the machines he despises to discover who wants Daryl dead. In the process, he learns Synthetics can be as unique as the humans they emulate.

Digging deeper, Max finds an ever-widening conspiracy that involves two warring factions of enhanced Synthetics and the company that created them. What he discovers brings into question whether he even truly knows who he has been working with.

Who is real, who is Synthetic, and who is the next target? Max finds himself in a race to sort it all out before Daryl, and possibly humanity runs out of time.

What’s Next for B.K. Bass

B.K. Bass has some big news to share with everybody, and we wanted to help get the word out as this will also be affecting upcoming releases in our own catalog.

After looking over the reviews for his novellas, we’ve all noticed a common trend of his readers wishing for more! In the interest of making sure we are keeping those readers happy, we’ve all decided it was time for B.K. to shift gears and start focusing on longer projects.

His first novel – What Once Was Home – will be coming out this fall. His upcoming title Parting the Veil was coming out this summer as a novella, but will now be coming out this fall as a novel as well!

B.K. will still be working on novellas contiguous to these projects, so if you’re waiting for a sequel to Warriors of Understone or Night Shift, or the next wave of Ravencrest Chronicles books; those are still in the works!

Find out more about B.K.’s plans and what he’s working on in his new blog post with the same title as this one: What’s Next for B.K. Bass.

Plagued by threats both within and without, life is a constant struggle to survive and a furious battle is around every corner. Launch Day Q&A with Editor in Chief B.K. Bass

It’s a special day here at Kyanite Publishing because we’re launching our first volume of the Kyanite Press! You can order it now from our website or Amazon. It’s also being carried at The Wyvern’s Tale in Asheville, NC and in more locations soon!

We’ve received a ton of questions from interested readers and writers. Editor in Chief, B.K. Bass answers the most pressing (get it?) below. If you have more questions for B.K., simply comment or send an email to info@kyanitepublishing.com! We’ll do our best to answer within 48 hours.

How do you pick the stories? Is there anything you’re looking for in particular?

Quality is the primary factor.  I’m looking for stories that are polished with an easy, readable flow.  Considering the Press publishes only short fiction, the narrative needs to be tightly constructed and convey its message within a limited length. I want to find stories that are either fast-paced and entertaining or that offer something new to the world.  Something that breaks the rules or explores an idea that hasn’t been explored before. Either way, the story needs to be a lot of fun or very intellectually engaging.

Does an author need a platform to submit?

No! One of the benefits of being a Kyanite Press author is that you have a permanent home on our website with links to your website and social media accounts. It’s a way to refer traffic to your platform, but if you don’t have a way to engage the audience it won’t do much for you.  If you just want to submit for fun or see your words in print, that’s not a problem. Not everybody is after the same thing.

What are your standard contract terms?

We use a licensing agreement.  The author retains all rights to the work.  In other words, they give us permission to use the story. We ask for a 90-day exclusivity. After, the author is free to publish the story anywhere. We have annual anthologies planned, and the author will receive a pro rata royalty for those sales.

Where will the Kyanite Press be sold?

As of September 2018, it’s available online through retailers such as Amazon, at The Wyvern’s Tale in North Carolina, and on our website. We are growing every day and will be adding retailers to our website as we reach terms.  Check out our events page for conferences and book fairs we’ll be attending – the Press will be sold there, too!

Is appearing in the Kyanite Press a good step to securing a book deal with Kyanite Publishing?

Establishing mutually beneficial relationships with all our authors and creating a family atmosphere within our community is our core philosophy. Publishing a short story with the Kyanite Press is a great way to start building that relationship but it’s in no way a requirement.

Tell us about the Halloween issue. How will it be different?

The Halloween volume is 100% horror.  We accept speculative horror for the Press year-round, but this issue is dedicated to it.  It’s also a whopping 200+ pages!

Does the Press take speculative romance/erotica short stories, like Kyanite Kiss?

If you have something that’s action-packed with a romantic sub-plot, that would be more up our alley. Think of the old pulp fiction magazines in the 1920’s, and you’ll have an idea of what we are looking for.  We’re marketing to a wide audience and at family-friend conferences, so a sexy, blonde cyberpunk detective or a scantily clad damsel in distress saved by the sword-wielding barbarian is great, but they can’t indulge in any graphic sex on our pages.

Well, that’s it for this round of questions and answers about the Kyanite Press. Stay tuned for more insider posts next week!
