Release Schedule Changes

In light of the current global emergency, we at Kyanite Publishing have decided to suspend all upcoming releases until the situation becomes more stable. This has been a difficult decision, but for several reasons we feel this is the most responsible thing for us to do.

Our first concern is the satisfaction of our readers. Amazon has announced that they will be prioritizing delivery of essential products—such as food, medicine, and household supplies—over all other products. Also, our distributor is taking steps to protect their staff and will be scaling back their operations, which is cutting off the opportunity to list new titles and fulfill print orders. We anticipate other arms of the global delivery infrastructure will be impacted by the situation, as well. As a result, delivery of new titles may not be possible.

Also, because of distribution delays for print orders, please be aware that purchases of print copies of our existing catalog will likely be delayed for the duration of the crisis.

We are also concerned about the social impact of our upcoming titles, many of which deal with themes of dystopian and apocalyptic futures. Right now, we feel these themes will hit too close to home. Out of respect for those who are dealing with these issues in a very real way right now, we feel this is not the right time to share these stories with the world.

Finally, as the global economy is affected by the pandemic and individuals find themselves unable to go to work, we do not feel that spending on entertainment products such as books and magazines should be a priority. We would much rather wait until better times to encourage entertainment spending, and instead encourage our global neighbors to focus on sustaining themselves and assisting each other with essentials such as food, medicine, and other necessities.

If there was an upcoming release you were planning to purchase from us in the upcoming months, we encourage you to instead consider donating that amount to a local charity, hospital, or relief agency—such as the Red Cross or Red Crescent.

That all being said, we want to assure you all that we are still operating as usual behind the scenes. Our currently available titles will remain available, and we will continue to work on preparing new titles for release in the future. We do not anticipate the cancellation of any titles. We see this as a temporary measure, and will be reevaluating our stance regularly as the situation changes.

In an effort to do our part to help in what ways we can during this crisis, we’ve also decided to offer some of our back-catalog of eBook titles for free. We understand that many people are spending long hours at home and the psychological health of our populations is as important as our physical health. Hopefully, a little reading material will help with this. We’re offering the entire first volume of the Kyanite Press journal of speculative fiction for free for the duration of the crisis, and will be rotating through books volunteered by our authors to be given away. We hope you enjoy these titles, and that a little escapism might make it just a little easier to cope with these troubling times. You can find all these titles here.

We’d also like to take this moment to wish everyone the best of health and safety.

Warmest regards and best wishes,

B.K. Bass

New Catalog Page!

We’re happy to announce that kyanitepublishing.com has an all new catalog page. Organized by author, title, and series; it’s now easier than ever to browse our titles and find your favorite author.

Each title in our catalog also has a completely redesigned landing page, complete with the book’s blurb, genre information, category and length, release dates, pricing, retail links, author bio, and reviews.

We’ve worked hard to make sure everything you need to know about each book is all in one place!

We’re very excited about this new design, and hope that everyone finds it easier to navigate than our old system. Unfortunately, this has come about due to the closing of our online store. Due to new U.S. tax laws that went into effect this year, we don’t currently have the infrastructure to process sales through our website. But, all our titles are readily available from a variety of quality booksellers!

We hope everybody will still consider kyanitepublishing.com their home for information on all the great new projects we’re working on, in addition to our beautiful and entertaining back catalog. Thank you all for being with us on this voyage!

Say Hello to Our New Acquisitions!

In fall 2019, we invited authors to submit their speculative fiction manuscripts with or without representation. The acquisitions committee reviewed those manuscripts and made final recommendations, resulting in a wave of offers. True to our mission, most offers were made to authors already published with us, including A.R. Vagnetti, Michael D. Nadeau, Jonathan Lazar, Joseph Kassabian, Crystal L. Kirkham, and Aisha Tritle.

FULL LIST OF NEW ACQUISITIONS

The “Storm” series by A.R. Vagnetti. The first book in the series, “Forgotten Storm,” was acquired in 2018 and published in 2019. Described as “steamier than expected” with “amazing worldbuilding,” the series will continue with “Forbidden Storm,” scheduled for publication in summer 2020.

“The Lythinall Saga” by Michael D. Nadeau. The first book, “The Darkness Returns,” was acquired in 2018 and published in 2019. Expanding Our Horizons

Since our founding in July 2018, our focus has been on finding and sharing stories we love. Both of us founders rated speculative fiction as a favorite genre, so we began by publishing exactly that. In the last year and a half, we’ve grown exponentially, immersed ourselves in the industry, and developed a loyal readership. We’re excited to announce that as part of our strategic planning, we’ll now be expanding beyond the scope of speculative fiction to other genres we are equally passionate about.

Kyanite Publishing will now actively seek out stories in the mystery, thriller, and historical fiction genres.

We will also be pursuing non-fiction titles in the near future.

Sam Hendricks

Sam Hendricks, Publisher

I’m thrilled about this expansion and I look forward to seeing our catalog–essentially, our identity–grow and change as we do. I’ve always had an eclectic taste in books, and some of my first favorites were thrillers. I love stories that can keep me awake at night, speed reading just to get to the end, and there’s a robust market for thrillers that can bend genres and offer fresh takes on the old tropes. Mysteries were also some of the first books to line my shelves. I love every kind of mystery, especially noir and police procedurals. Last but not least, I’m enamored with non-fiction. I’m always game for educational texts in subjects I’m interested in (like geology, history, mythology, and anthropology) and biographies. I think there’s a good chance we’ll focus on just a few sub-genres of non-fiction that best fit our wheelhouse and readership–but more on that later.

B.K. Bass

B.K. Bass, Editor-in-Chief

As a life-long student of history, one of my favorite genres has been historical fiction; be it in the form of the printed word or on film. To me, there’s nothing quite as exciting as taking a step back in time and—for a moment—experiencing what life was like in another era. Also, as one who is constantly striving to learn more about not only history, but all aspects of our universe, non-fiction books have been the lifeblood of my continuing education. While I love reading for entertainment, I feel there’s nothing more rewarding than reading for education. That’s why we’ve already been publishing a variety of non-fiction articles via the Kyanite Press Online. We strongly value the importance of education and sharing knowledge with the world, so we feel it is an important step that we grow our catalog to include more novel-length non-fiction as well.

Our readership knows we’ve already published quite a few mysteries and thrillers that just so happened to be speculative in nature. From B.K.’s own Night Shift to Jonathan Lazar’s Zachariah Lars and the High Elf Mystery, we’ve been entertained and intrigued. Now, we’re opening the door for more of these gripping stories whether they have a speculative element or not.

“I’m an author. When can I submit my work in these genres?”

We will have an open window in March of 2020, specifically seeking out works in the mystery, thriller, and historical fiction genres. We will not be accepting non-fiction submissions yet, but keep an eye out for more news on that front soon.

We appreciate you reading this announcement and sharing it with anyone you think would benefit from the information. We’ll be revealing more details soon, including a “manuscript wish list” with specific sub-genres we’re most likely to love.

Sincerely,

Sam & B.K.
